To travel or not to travel? That is the question I have lately been asking myself. I have been longing and yearning for a European getaway, especially to the Mediterranean. I pine for the tingling sensation of the hot summer sun on my back, to taste and savour fresh and seasonal delicacies, to smell the faint scents of pomegranate and lemon in the warm evening breeze...
Since the likelihood of that fantasy is dwindling, I have turned to literature for solace and consolation. I love how books can transport you to another time and place and provide you with a sanctuary when you are at your neediest. For those of you experiencing the same emotions as me, I have comprised a list of titles to whisk you away this summer wherever you may be.
James Baldwin, Giovanni’s Room
Andrea Camilleri, the Montalbano series
E. M. Forster, A Room With A View
Ian McEwan, Atonement
L. P. Hartley, The Go-Between
Edmund White, The Flaneur
Louis de Bernieres, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin
Ernest Hemingway, The Sun Also Rises
